Columbus Day is a holiday celebrating the anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas, which happened on the October 12, 1492 in the Julian calendar, or October 21, 1492 in the modern Gregorian calendar.  The holiday has been commemorated in the U.S. on the second Monday in October.

Government offices and banks are closed on this day.
